The meaning of Alanine Aminotransferase test in liver disease diagnosis

Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) are enzymes found mainly in the liver, but also found in red blood cells, heart cells, muscle tissue and other organs, such as the pancreas and kidneys. An AST test is often performed along with an alanine aminotransferase (ALT) test. Both are enzymes found in the liver that become elevated in the blood when the liver is damaged. So the alanine aminotransferase (ALT) test is a blood test that checks for liver damage. Diagnosis is testing that happens after symptoms have started. Its goal is to find the problem or cause for symptoms. ALT testing may be useful in diagnosis of symptoms that can be tied to liver problems like nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, itching, jaundice, fatigue, and appetite loss.

AST is usually done as part of a group of liver function tests called a liver panel. It's often ordered with a test for alanine aminotransferase (ALT), another liver enzyme.
