CheKine™ Micro MDA Assay Kit: 5 Key Questions About Lipid Peroxidation Answered

What is MDA and why is it measured?
Malondialdehyde (MDA) is a natural by-product of lipid peroxidation, formed when reactive oxygen species attack polyunsaturated fatty acids in cell membranes[reference:65]. MDA and 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) are the two most studied lipid peroxidation markers[reference:66]. Quantifying MDA is the most widely used method for assessing lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress in biological samples.
What diseases are associated with lipid peroxidation?
Lipid peroxidation is implicated in numerous diseases[reference:67]:
- Atherosclerosis — oxidative modification of LDL
- Diabetes — oxidative damage to pancreatic β-cells
- Alzheimer's disease — neuronal membrane oxidation
- Cancer — oxidative DNA damage and membrane disruption
- Inflammatory diseases — ROS-mediated tissue injury
- How does the MDA detection work?
The principle is straightforward and well-established: MDA in the sample reacts with thiobarbituric acid (TBA) to generate an MDA-TBA adduct, which is quantified colorimetrically at OD 532 nm[reference:68]. To avoid interference from sucrose, absorbance at 600 nm is also measured, and MDA is calculated from the difference (OD532 - OD600)[reference:69].
What sample types are compatible?
The kit is compatible with a wide range of samples[reference:70]:
- Serum, plasma, urine
- Animal and plant tissues
- Cells and bacteria
- Other biological fluids
Fast and convenient — the kit is designed for measuring lipid peroxidation across diverse sample types[reference:71].
How should samples be stored?
If not assayed immediately, samples can be stored at -80°C[reference:72]. The kit itself has a storage time of 6 months from receipt[reference:73]. Refer to the list of materials supplied for storage conditions of individual components[reference:74].
What makes Abbkine's MDA kit different?
Abbkine's CheKine™ Micro Lipid Peroxidation (MDA) Assay Kit provides a convenient, ready-to-use tool with minimal hands-on time[reference:75]. Unlike traditional TBA assays that require extensive sample preparation and heating steps, this kit streamlines the workflow without compromising accuracy.
