Background Catalyzes the first glycosylation step in glycosphingolipid biosynthesis, the transfer of glucose to ceramide. Able to use UDP-galactose to synthesize galactosylceramide with 10% of efficiency with which it utilizes UDP-glucose. May also serve as a "flippase".
