    CheKine™ Hydroxyl Free Radical Scavenging Capacity Assay Kit provides a simple and easy colorimetric assay for the study of Hydroxyl radical scavenging Capacity in various sample. In this assay, H2O2/ Fe2+ produces hydroxyl radical through Fenton reaction, and oxidizes Fe2+ to Fe3+, resulting in the decrease of 536nm absorbance. The Inhibition rate of samples upon the decrease of 536nm absorbance can reflect the Hydroxyl Free Radical Scavenging Capacity of the sample.

  • Background

    The hydroxyl radical, •OH, is the neutral form of the hydroxide ion (OH−), highly reactive (easily becoming hydroxyl groups) and consequently short-lived. However, they form an important part of radical chemistry. Most notably hydroxyl radicals are produced from the decomposition of hydroperoxides (ROOH) or, in atmospheric chemistry, by the reaction of excited atomic oxygen with water. The hydroxyl radical can damage virtually all types of macromolecules: carbohydrates, nucleic acids (mutations), lipids (lipid peroxidation) and amino acids (e.g. conversion of Phe to m-Tyrosine and o-Tyrosine), resulting in cell structure and function damage, and then lead to metabolic disorders. The scavenging ability of hydroxyl radical represents the antioxidant ability, widely used in the research of antioxidant health products and drugs.
